The NBA will have regular season games in Berlin, London and Manchester in the 2026–2027 season as part of a European swing that includes more games in Paris over the coming years.

The Memphis Grizzlies and the Orlando Magic will play regular-season games in Berlin on January 15, 2026, and in London on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2026. The league also will play regular-season games in Manchester and Paris in 2027 and in Berlin and Paris in 2028. The games will be held at Uber Arena (Berlin), The O2 (London), Co-op Live (Manchester) and the Accor Arena (Paris).

“Announcing the next three season’s regular-season games in Europe reflects the incredible momentum and appetite for NBA basketball in France, Germany, the UK and across the region,” said George Aivazoglou, NBA managing director, Europe and Middle East. “We look forward to welcoming the Grizzlies and the Magic to Berlin and London and to engaging fans, players and the local communities through the games and the surrounding event.”

The NBA Berlin Game 2026 presented by Tissot will mark the 14th game featuring an NBA team in Germany since 1984 and the league’s first regular-season game in the country. The NBA London Game 2026 presented by Tissot will be the 19th game featuring an NBA team in the UK since 1993 and the league’s 10th regular-season game in London.

The game in Manchester in 2027 will mark the second game featuring an NBA team in Manchester (2013) and the league’s first regular-season game in the city. The game in Paris in 2027 will mark the 16th game featuring an NBA team in France since 1991 and the league’s sixth regular-season game in Paris.

The Grizzlies have played four times in Europe before and the Magic, with German brothers Franz and Moritz Wagner plus second-year German forward Tristan da Silva, have played three times before in Europe.

As the home to Basketball England on the Etihad Campus, Manchester’s recent investment includes the refurbishment of three major outdoor basketball courts, as well as being the home of the National Basketball Performance Centre, providing junior and senior leagues, wheelchair and SEN basketball, community drop-in sessions and more. Manchester’s own Magic and Mystics have called the city home since 2000, winning over 80 national titles.

“Manchester once again has shown what a magnificent draw it is for major events, and we are thrilled to welcome the NBA back to our city,” said Bev Craig, leader of Manchester City Council. “With a growing basketball scene in Manchester this event feels like the perfect fit and will  give so many people in our city the chance to see what the best athletes in the sport can do on our home turf.”

Two destination marketing executives have entered into a friendly wager tied to the NBA Finals between the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder, which started on Thursday night with a game-winning jumper by Tyrese Haliburton with 0.3 seconds left as the Pacers won Game 1, 111-110.

The wager is between Leonard Hoops, president and chief executive officer of Visit Indy, and Zac Craig, president of Visit Oklahoma City. If the Thunder win, Hoops will treat Craig to dinner at St. Elmo Steak House, a two-night stay at the JW Marriott Indianapolis and two club-level tickets to next season’s Thunder-Pacers game in Indianapolis.

If the Pacers win the series, Craig will treat Hoops to a two-night stay at The National in OKC, dinner for two at Mickey Mantle’s Steakhouse and two floor seats to next season’s Thunder-Pacers game in Oklahoma City.

As well as the local DMOs, the two governors of the respective states made their own little wager.

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun called out Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, promising “a big package of pork products from the Smoking Goose Meatery” if the Pacers lost to the Thunder. Stitt, in return, said he was “going to put on the line some of the best steaks in the world from right here in Oklahoma.”

In celebration of Earth Day, the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena have announced that they have reached a new sustainability milestone by diverting more than 10 million pounds of waste from landfills since May 2021.

The venue recycled nearly four million pounds of aluminum, plastic, glass and cardboard, composted over three million pounds of food and organic material and repurposed nearly three million pounds of electronics, clothing and other items.

“We are honored to serve as a community asset, not only in sports and entertainment, but also in sustainability,” said Sofi Armenakian, head of sustainable strategy for the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena. “Ten million pounds is a huge number. This milestone is a testament to the power of collaboration — from our team members and partners to the fans who join us every event. Together, we’re proving that when a venue leads with purpose, meaningful environmental impact follows. We’re all part of the solution.”

Since May 2021, the venue has diverted a minimum of 90 percent of waste from landfills and in April 2022, the venue became the first sports venue in the world to receive TRUE Platinum certification for zero waste. The Hawks and State Farm Arena have also reduced waste by 651,209 pounds by eliminating paper tickets, individual condiment packets, disposable service ware and more.

“We are incredibly proud of to hit this 10-million-pound milestone,” said Andrew Saltzman, president of business enterprise and chief commercial officer for the Hawks and State Farm Arena. “Our success in sustainability is a credit to our partners who continue supporting our efforts, our employees who are driven to be leaders in the space and the fans who attend our events and appreciate the importance we place on taking care of the environment.”

The Hawks and State Farm Arena have built several sustainability partnerships in the community, including official aluminum recycling partner, Novelis, which sponsors the in-game segment ‘Recycle and Win,’ rewarding fans for correctly using the compost, recycle and trash bins.

The Barclays Center in Brooklyn will begin a second round of renovations this summer as part of a five-year plan that will total $500 million.

BSE Global — parent company of Barclays Center, the Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty — unveiled details for the arena upgrades, including a new premium membership club, Gallagher Terrace, a new fan zone in the arena’s upper concourse and The Bridge.

Barclays Center’s Gallagher Terrace will be the only area in the arena to provide in-seat dining with waiter service and The Bridge will feature the arena’s most expansive bar, 63 feet in length and accessible to all upper bowl guests. The Bridge will also bring in-game entertainment opportunities to the upper bowl.

Renovation work will be led by architects at Populous, while Shawmut Design and Construction is the construction manager for the project. Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of the 2024–2025 Brooklyn Nets season and will be completed prior to the start of the 2025–2026 season.

Construction will not impact the New York Liberty’s home schedule nor any summer concerts at Barclays Center.

“We are thrilled to enter phase two of our five-year arena renovation plan at Barclays Center, a significant leap forward in enhancing the overall guest experience for all ticket holders,” said Shanon Ferguson, BSE Global chief hospitality officer. “We are committed to continuously setting new standards in hospitality for our guests, creating more immersive, comfortable, and elevated experiences for all and ensuring every visit to Barclays Center is unforgettable, regardless of seat location.”

Barclays Center’s loge boxes and sections of 40/40 Club will be reimagined as Gallagher Terrace, a 5,300 square-foot area accessible exclusively to 110 guests. Members of the space will also have access to a private VIP entrance and a full-service private bar with premium wine offerings and a team of sommeliers.

BSE Global and Gallagher — a global insurance brokerage, risk management and consulting services company — recently entered a multi-year partnership.

“The new Gallagher Terrace at Barclays Center is just part of the investment Gallagher is making in the New York community,” said Christopher Mead, chief marketing officer at Gallagher. “We believe in investing in the spaces where we live, work and play. We look forward to increasing Gallagher’s presence over time in the New York market to better connect with our partners, their fans and the community.”

The west end of Barclays Center’s upper concourse will be transformed into The Bridge, a two-level, 6,800 square-foot multi-use space open to all guests that will serve as both a destination to gather, eat, drink and take in the action, as well as an activation zone for entertainment like halftime shows and fan contests.

Guests will be able to enjoy unobstructed views from two standing-room platform decks and purchase drinks and snacks from a new bar – the largest in the arena. Windows will be installed behind and surrounding the new bar, providing guests with views of the developing skyline of Downtown Brooklyn.

NBA and FIBA to Take Steps Toward New European Basketball League https://www.sportstravelmagazine.com/nba-and-fiba-to-take-steps-toward-new-european-league/ Fri, 28 Mar 2025 11:15:04 +0000 https://www.sportstravelmagazine.com/?p=71390

The NBA and FIBA announced a joint exploration of a new professional men’s basketball league in Europe following the NBA’s Board of Governors meeting in New York, the most concrete step after discussions began more than a year ago with prospective investors, teams, arena developers and commercial partners.

Specifics are few, with the initial target being a 16-team league that would likely use FIBA rules, such as a 40-minute game instead of the NBA’s 48-minute model. The new league could carry some sort of NBA branding and would be part of the current European club system so that teams would also play in their respective national leagues.

The announcement was made by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis following the NBA Board of Governors meeting and the FIBA Executive Committee meeting earlier this month in Mies, Switzerland.

“We feel now is the time to move to that next stage,” Silver said, noting that NBA owners offered “enthusiastic support” for such a move. He added “the response we’ve gotten from the marketplace is very positive.”

In addition to permanent teams, the league would offer clubs a pathway to qualification through the European basketball system. One of the ideas being floated is to have as many as four spots available to be reallocated through relegation, something popular in European leagues but nonexistent in major U.S. sports.

About one in every six current NBA players hail from Europe, including Denver’s Nikola Jokic (Serbia) and Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece) — who have combined for five of the past six MVP awards — along with the Los Angeles Lakers’ Luka Doncic (Serbia) and San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama (France).

“The European basketball community is proud of its seven-decade history of international club competitions and the elite talent it develops,” said Zagklis. “Yet given the sport’s popularity and the success of national team competitions, there is untapped potential in European club basketball. A new league in Europe would combine the NBA’s business acumen with the international expertise of FIBA to attract new basketball fans and investors alike, maximize club benefits, and establish synergies for the benefit of all stakeholders.”

As part of a new league, the NBA and FIBA would also plan to dedicate financial support and resources to the continued development of European basketball, including club team academies and the NBA and FIBA’s existing programs to develop players, coaches and referees.

“Given the opportunity to design a league from scratch, one of the things we’re looking at is what are the best elements we can take of both systems,” Silver said.

The New Orleans Pelicans will play two preseason games against teams from Australia’s National Basketball League this fall, the first time an NBA team has played in Australia.

The Pelicans will play Melbourne United and South East Melbourne Phoenix in Melbourne Park on October 3 and October 5. The NBL will serve as the official promoter and organizer of the Melbourne Series.

“We are honored to be part of this historic occasion for basketball in Australia,” said New Orleans Pelicans Governor Gayle Benson. “This collaboration with the NBL and NBA to bring the Pelicans to Melbourne provides an exceptional opportunity to engage with our global fanbase and share the rich spirit and culture of New Orleans with basketball fans in the region.”

In addition to the games, the NBA, NBL and Pelicans will conduct NBA Cares community outreach initiatives and lifestyle events leading up to and during the week of the games, including a Fan Night on October 4. The NBA and the NBL also plan to expand their grassroots basketball development efforts in Asia-Pacific at the youth and elite levels in the coming years.

“The significance of this announcement for basketball in Australia and the NBL can’t be overstated,” said NBL Executive Director and Owner Larry Kestelman. “Hosting an NBA team in Australia has been a long-held dream for everyone at the NBL and to see this initiative finally come to fruition after a 15-year journey shows that much can be accomplished when you ‘dream big.’ I want to thank Adam Silver, Mark Tatum, Michael Ma and the team at the NBA for being open to this amazing vision and for their continued support of our League.”

The announcement builds on the NBA and NBL’s prior collaborations that began in 2016. Seven NBL teams have traveled to the U.S. to play 24 preseason games against NBA teams. The NBA twice collaborated with the NBL to host Basketball Without Borders, the NBA and FIBA’s global basketball development and community outreach program, in Australia (2016 in Melbourne and 2024 in Perth).

To date, nine players from the NBL’s Next Stars program have been drafted from the NBL into the NBA, including Ousmane Dieng (Oklahoma City Thunder), Josh Giddey (Chicago Bulls), LaMelo Ball (Charlotte Hornets) and 2024 No. 2 overall pick Alex Sarr (Washington Wizards).

“These historic games and the surrounding events will not only be a celebration of basketball but will also serve as a catalyst for the continued growth of the game in Australia,” said NBA Asia Head of Strategy Rajah Chaudhry. “We look forward to working with the Pelicans and the NBL to make this a memorable week for the teams, players and most importantly the fans.”

The PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational will be moved out of the Pacific Palisades area after wildfires near Riviera Country Club and throughout Southern California, the latest in a series of sporting events moved or postponed.

The Genesis Invitational is hosted by Tiger Woods. As well as annually hosting the tournament, Riviera Country Club is also scheduled to host the 2026 U.S. Women’s Open, golf at the 2028 Olympic Summer Games and the 2031 U.S. Open.

“We are grateful for the life-saving efforts of first responders and the tireless work being done to put an end to the tragic wildfires,” the Tour said in a statement on Thursday. “Out of respect for the unfolding situation, we have determined that The Genesis Invitational 2025 will be played at an alternate location the week of Feb. 10-16. A venue update and additional tournament information will be provided in the coming days.”

Riviera Country Club was not damaged in the fires that have killed at least 25 people and destroyed more than 12,000 structures. It was founded 99 years ago and has hosted U.S. Open and the PGA Championship in the past.

Firefighters are still battling fires in Palisades and Eaton. Still to come is clearing communities of ash and debris before any effort to rebuild.

The fires from this month have affected sporting events in a variety of leagues. The NFL moved the Los Angeles Rams’ NFC playoff game against Minnesota from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the home of the Arizona Cardinals. The Rams beat the Vikings and play at the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round this weekend.

The NBA postponed two Los Angeles Lakers home games against Charlotte and San Antonio plus a Clippers home game against the Hornets. The Lakers game against the Hornets will be played on February 19 with the Clippers hosting the Hornets on March 16. The date for the Spurs at Lakers game will be announced at a later time.

The NHL also postponed a Los Angeles Kings home game against the Calgary Flames. That game has not yet been rescheduled.

The Rose Bowl Stadium, which hosted its 111th Rose Bowl game on January 1, is being utilized as a hub for donations to aid the victims of the nearby Eaton Canyon fire, which is seven miles east of the stadium. The stadium and its adjacent parking lots are being used for emergency response efforts.
