The Indian Olympic Association has formally approved the country’s bid to host the Commonwealth Games 2030 with three cities listed as potential hosts in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar and New Delhi.
Ahmedabad is considered the favorite to be India’s prospective host and has been floated as a potential Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games future host. New Delhi was the host for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India, the country’s most successful Commonwealth Games performance ever.
“I am happy that all are together and it was a unanimous decision and our preparations will go ahead. We can’t just tell whether Ahmedabad is the host city. We have good facilities in Bhubaneswar and even in Delhi also,” IOA President PT Usha said ahead of the final bid proposal deadline of August 31.
The 2030 host nation will be decided by the General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport in the last week of November in Glasgow. India was already one of seven nations that had declared interest in bidding for a future Commonwealth Games.
Scotland rescued the 2026 Commonwealth Games that were in jeopardy after Australia’s Victoria state backed out of plans to host the event. Victoria state lawmakers cited escalating costs when they withdrew their commitment last year to host the games, though an inquiry later found the estimates they relied on were overstated.
Glasgow’s scaled-back event next summer will have athletics and swimming along with track cycling, gymnastics, netball, weightlifting, boxing, judo, bowls and 3×3 basketball. There will also be integrated para events in six of those sports: Athletics, swimming, track cycling, weightlifting, bowls and basketball. IOA officials have said a 2030 Games in India would be a full-program and potentially include indigenous sports like kho kho, which held its inaugural World Cup in India in 2025.
The event held every four years was established in 1930 as the British Empire Games and is open to 74 nations and territories. It has been staged in Australia, Canada, England, India, Jamaica, Malaysia, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. Birmingham hosted the 2022 games.
